Finished Colour Board

Experimenting!

The design I was working from was two pieces of fabric layered over eachother which is the technique Reverse Appliqué. I thought instead of doing the obvious like the above sample cutting into the fabric to reveal the bottom layer stitching over it! I thought it would be more interesting to try something different so I used a zip and the zip opens to reveal the bottom layer but as much of the fabric as I want! Nice interactive swatch!

Designs

After drawing my thumbnails I then photocopied some designs enlarged, reduced! I started to think about how I would create these designs using fabric manipulation techniques and what textures and sufaces, weights of fabric I would use! Below are just some of my thumbnails and designs that have made swatches from!

The rope like shape I used hand dyed calico fabric and a technique called rouloo stuffed with wadding then tied thread around to separate each part. On the bottom I used a different fabric because the bottom part of the design is more of a loose shape so I pleated the fabric, the almost decorative top part of the design I used a piece of yarn and tied small pieces of fabric as the small pieces that hang from the line. I looked at them more as being an organic, than a diamond like shape they are in the design, I just felt that the other parts of the design were controlled so it would be nice to have something more free.

Finised Fabric Swatch of the above design

Below are more thumbnails but I have taken parts of these designs zoomed in and repeated areas

Colour Story!

Pink and Blue

Custo Barcelona

Definitely a designer worth looking at for future work concerning colour and pattern! Get a real 70's feel of his work I love it!

For this assignment I found him most interesting for his fabric techniques and sparking of ideas! Which I found while researching his earlier work in the library! (see notebook)

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen loves his ruffles and gathering fabric. Look at what he does with the below garment using the shape colour and material but manipulating the fabric so its full of texture and movement amazing.

Again with this garment he manipulates sections of the fabric and uses the colour to draw your attention to the curves of the body, then at the end lots of ruffles and layers! Love the colours in this piece they work brilliantly together! Great dip dye look!!

This is unreal! A Textile designers dream to touch this dress!! Full of texture it looks as if he has covered a colourful under garment with this white textured surface, which it how the colours are peering through which I think works great because if there was too much colour this dress would be way too busy! It reminds me of cutwork paper! Looks so delicate yet like it would be really hard to touch! Has me thinking about layering in my swatches using cutwork or/and dissolvable fabric, and latex!
